Olive Lindberg Torset was born in Minneapolis in 1917.
Her parents were Marshall and Augusta Lindberg. In 1925, her mother passed
away and her father sent her to live with her grandparents in Cedarhome near
Stanwood. They were Anna and Mike Lindberg. They were immigrants from Sunne,
Varmland and Smaland.
She went to school in Cedarhome and graduated from high school in East
Stanwood. Upon graduating, she went to work at the Washington Co-op in Mount
Vernon where she took up residence. After a few years there she went to
clerking, first at Equals Variety Store and later at Horns Department Store
for many years.
She married Ole Torset in 1937. His parents came from Aakvik, Norway. Ole
started working at age 14 at Fir Island farming for the Wylies, Haytons and
Hughes for several years, then worked in logging with "tree topping" his
specialty. Later he ran heavy construction jobs in Skagit, cleared five
schedules of the North Cross Highway, and many jobs in Washington, Oregon
and Montana. Ole was well known in logging and heavy construction, having
been superintendent of Strand and Graves Gard, also C&S Logging Co. and
later for C&S Heavy Construction. Besides the North Cross Highway, he
worked on many dams, power lines, etc. He started out doing high rigging in
the woods, cutting some at 200 feet high.
Ole and Olive retired to Park Village and Ole passed away in 1995. They
settled in Skagit County in 1935 and had lived in the county ever since that
time in the area of Conway and Mount Vernon. Olive is a member of the VASA
Lodge, and has been for 58 years. She loves flowers and knows what to do
with them and still is a member of the Conway Garden Club.
Olive and Ole had two children, Dianne and Donald. Dianne attended schools
in Conway and Mount Vernon.
