- Leonard Sinness was born in North Viking Township, Maddock, ND, on October 9, 1918, to Lars and Petra (Sabo) Sinness. He was baptized and confirmed in the West Minnewaukan Free Lutheran Church, ND, and received his education in Aurora Township and Maddock public schools. In 1940, he got work on the ore boats on the Great Lakes. He joined the Merchant Marine after WWII began and attended the Coast Guard Academy at New London, CN, graduating as a lieutenant 2nd class. He served on ships carrying ammunition and supplies to combat areas in the South Pacific.
After the war he returned to the states and was married to Maxine Skinner of Middletown, IN, at Bremerton, WA, in February of 1946. They returned to North Dakota and farmed north of Flora, ND. When the farm home was destroyed by fire, they sold the farm and moved to Randall, WA, where he was employed as custodian of the Randall Consolidated School. They later moved to Palmdale, where he worked in the service of appliance department at Sears until he opened his own cabinet-making shop, which he operated until becoming ill. His wife died on November 15, 1975.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas of St. John, AZ, and Steven of Palmdale; two daughters, Kimberly (Stuart) Fletcher of Palmdale, and Mary (Joe) Hicks of Big Creek, CA; five grandchildren; a brother, Palmer of Minnewaukan, ND; and two sisters, Edith (Carl) Hansen of Coon Rapids, MN, and Agnes (Fred) Halvorson of Minnewaukan, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Michael, a brother, Oscar, and a sister, Gladys Lerwick.
