- Joyce J. Spilde, 94, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Monday, July 1, 2024, at Valley Senior Living on 42nd-Woodside Village in the Prairieview neighborhood where she had resided for the past four years.
Joyce Jean Spoonland was born June 10, 1930, to Oscar and Thea Randine (Dahl) Spoonland in Pisek, North Dakota. Joyce was raised on her family farm. She attended a one room country school for her early years and graduated from Park River High School in 1945. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951.
Joyce married Robert Arthur Lommen on August 8, 1954, and resided in Buxton, ND. They were married for 36 years and shared six children, Lauribeth, David Paul, Lanelle Marie, Darcee Jill, Rhonda Joy and Kristen Kay.
Joyce married Severin Orden Spilde on August 4, 1990. They lived on the farm in Springbrook Township, Kittson County, MN and enjoyed winters in Mesa, AZ. They were married for 30 years.
As a young adult, Joyce taught High School English, Speech, and Theater. She wrote poetry and short stories for enjoyment. When her children were older, she excelled in women's fashion working in the clothing industry. In her later years, she traveled throughout the United States, serving as a tour guide.
Joyce loved her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ and walked a life of faith and fortitude. She possessed a heart for charity for the elderly and for the in-firmed. Her precious devotion for music was passed on through her children and grandchildren, producing many who write, sing, perform and play musical instruments. Her gift of hospitality was evident in her hosting bountiful parties, events, and visitors, along with cooking scrumptious meals and baking Norwegian confectioneries. Her family fondly remembers many of her unique and delicious recipes.
She was passionate about God's creation, glorious flowers, gardening, and was an avid fisherwoman. She was an adventuresome traveler and avid reader of books. Enjoying all types of sewing and stitchery, she displayed her artistry and creativity through her work. She was a competitive card and board game player, with Pinochle being one of her all-time favorites. By instilling a love of Christ in her children through her lifelong relationship with Him, she spread the gospel of peace to many lost souls.
Remaining to cherish Joyce's memory are her children, Lauribeth Roemer (Mark), David Lommen (Kari), Lanelle Richards (Eric), Darcee Capdeville (Bryan), Rhonda Moorman (Jeff), and Kristen Lind (Mark). She has many loving grandchildren, Shane, Blayze, Alana; Brandon, Kristopher, Aaron; Gabriel, Logan, Heath Christian, Josiah; Derrick, Aaron, Alyssa; Daniel, Jonathan, Michelle; Anna, Marissa, and Nathaniel. She will also be remembered by many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Preceding Joyce in death are her first husband (Robert Lommen), her husband (Severin Spilde), her parents, her brother (Ambrose), and sister (Doris).
Funeral Service: Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Burial: Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks, MN.
