Robert P. "Bob" Schuller, 71, Bismarck, died Sept. 20, 2001, in his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, with the Bishop Paul A. Zipfel and the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 2:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Cathedral, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a vigil.
Bob was born Dec. 18, 1929, the son of Lambert and Phyllis (Arntsen) Schuller. He attended school in Minneapolis, Mankato State Teachers College and LaFalle Extension University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1955.
On Oct. 27, 1951, he married Darlene Hennen at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Minneapolis. They moved to Pine City, Minn., in 1957, where he owned WCMP radio station. The Schullers moved to Bismarck in 1967, where Bob purchased KBOM radio. In 1971, he left KBOM and co-founded Schuller, Candee and Saueressig Advertising Agency. He served as executive director of the State Bar Association of North Dakota. Bob and Dar also owned the Alex-Ruth Clothing Store in Bismarck.
In 1979 they moved to Great Falls, Mont., to manage KEIN radio where he also participated in Cursillo and marriage encounter, and was active in the local parish. They returned to Bismarck in 1981, where Bob worked for Meyer Broadcasting before beginning employment at St. Alexius Medical Center as director of community resources and development, a position he held until 1993.
Bob was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Bismarck on June 3, 1984, at the Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, by the most Rev. John F. Kinney. He was assigned as a deacon for the Church of Corpus Christi. After retiring from St. Alexius, the Schullers wintered in Mesa, Ariz., where Bob was active as a deacon at the Church of All Saints. Since 1999, Bob served as a director of communications for the Diocese of Bismarck.
Bob was a member of Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, Kiwanis, God's Child Project board of directors, as well as many other community and civic organizations. His greatest joys in life were his family and serving as a deacon.
Among the many awards Bob received are the 1989 Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award, the first recipient of Advertising Federation of Bismarck-Mandan's 1993 Addy's Silver Medal Award.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Mike Henneigh, Mesa, Ann and Tom Just, Las Vegas, and Jane and Dave Jackelen, Eagan, Minn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Meg, Bertha, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, John and Grace, Outing, Minn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to God's Child Project or St. Alexius Hospice. (Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck)
