Robert Landro, 93, a former longtime resident of the Hillsboro community, late of Beaverton, died Sunday morning, May 3, 2015 at the Ozone Adult Foster Care Home in Beaverton.
Bob was born July 24, 1921 in Astoria, Oregon to John E. Landro and Kristine (Fanes) Landro, immigrants from Norway. He was raised in Astoria, and graduated from Astoria High School in 1939. He worked at First National Bank in Astoria and then as a clerk at the Astoria Post Office where his father was also working. During WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving as an aviation radioman on PBY Catalinas at Naval Air Station Kaneohe, and at Alameda.
After the war he met Edna Mildred Swift on a blind date, and they were married in Portland on February 9, 1947. They made their home in Astoria where he again worked at the post office, and in 1952 their only child, Louise, was born. Bob was promoted to Assistant Postmaster, a position he held for about 15 years before retiring in 1972 after 31 years of service. After that he worked part time as a tax preparer for several years.
In 1973 they moved to Vista, CA., living there a few years before moving to Edmonds, WA, then Bellingham, and finally to Hillsboro, OR in 1981. They enjoyed many happy years with their two grandkids. They had attended Tualatin Valley Community Church in Hillsboro and later the Church of the Nazarene in Beaverton.
Among Bob's special interests were reading, pinochle, golf, bowling and traveling. He and Edna also liked to square dance and belonged to some bridge groups. While living in Astoria they were active in the First Methodist Church. The cornerstones of Bob's life were his faith in Jesus, love for his family and friends, and duty to his country.
He demonstrated his love and devotion for Edna when she became ill with Parkinson's disease. When she had to go into a nursing home he visited every day, sitting with her for eight hours a day for four years until she passed away in 2008. They had been married 61 years.
Bob was preceded in death by his three sisters, Jennie Thompson, Agnes Pedersen and Edna Lovvold, as well as a grandson-in-law, Michael McCoy. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Lloyd Ferrell, of Beaverton; two grandchildren, Christy McCoy, of Salem, and Mark Ferrell, of Marietta, Georgia; great-grandson, Andrew McCoy; and many nieces and nephews.
