- Helen M. McCabe, 60, 1109 Franklin, died Sunday in a Yakima Nursing home where she resided following surgery in June. She had been an active staff member at Central Washington State College until retirement due to illness.
She was born Nov. 15, 1915, at Mt. Vernon. Following graduation from high school she attended several colleges and universities including Washington State University, University of Southern California at Los Angeles, San Jose State College, Michigan State University, and Indiana University. She was a junior and senior high school teacher in physical Education and also taught in the remedial education program before coming to Ellensburg in 1956.
Her early teaching career included the public school systems at Toppenish, Hanford and Portland and the Susanville and Five Points, California school systems.
She and Burton W. McCabe were married in 1941.
A leader in the field of recreation and outdoor activities she had served as president of the National Recreation Association. She had contributed articles to many professional publications and was recognized as an authority in national, state and local activities related to leisure enrichment.
Mrs. McCabe had received honors and honorary memberships from numerous civic and educational groups and served on committees and boards representing a wide variety of endeavors in the interest of recreation.
In addition to professional organizations, she was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
She was a member of the Ellensburg Altrusa Club.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Scott McCabe of New Mexico, and Ross B. McCabe of New York, four grandchildren, three brothers, Harold Wersen of Boise, Ida., David Wersen of Llos Angeles, and Lewis Wersen of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and one sister, Mrs. Marion Purdy of Portland.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Episcopal Churcbh. The Rev. Nolan Redman will officiate. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery. Viewing hours for Mrs. McCabe will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Evensons.
