- John Charles Paulus October 11, 1920 - December 25, 2008 CHICO, CALIF. - John passed away on December 25, 2008 at his daughter Penny's home in Chico, California. He was born October 11, 1920 in Iowa City, Iowa to Carl and Martha Paulus. John grew up on the family's Iowa farm until they moved into Iowa City when he was in High School. While a member of the Iowa Medical National Guard, he was called to active duty in February 1941 and served in the Army until 1946. While stationed at a hospital in Modesto, California, he met Jean Engdahl who was in nurses' training. John and Jean were married Christmas day, 1945. After completing Law and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees at the University of Iowa, John accepted a professorship in 1949 at the Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon. There, Jean and John raised their daughters Lani, Lynne and Penny. After John's retirement from Willamette University in 1985, they moved to the Oregon coast where they spent 18 satisfying years in Pacific City. In 2002, Jean and John moved to Chico, California where John lived with his daughter Penny and her family. John is survived by his daughters, Lynne Paulus and Penny Paulus; sons-in-law, Dale Martin and Jay Goldberg; and grandsons, Matt, Alex, and Tashi. John will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, sense of humor and deep love and dedication to his family. John was a highly respected law professor and founded the Paulus Bar Review course (the first in Oregon). John's interests included, travel, tennis, sports, vegetable gardening, current events, playing bridge and working crossword puzzles. He especially enjoyed his extensive 'travels on a shoe string' in Europe, Asia and Africa with his wife Jean. A celebration of John's Life will be held in Chico on January 10. At a later date, in accordance with John's wishes his family will scatter his ashes in Oregon at the end of the Nestucca sand spit, where the Nestucca River meets the Pacific Ocean. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in John's name to KCHO North State Public Radio in Chico.
