- Elmer Walum, one of eight children of Jacob and Hannah (Musbach) Walum, was born February 1, 1915, at Lead, South Dakota. He passed away Thursday, April 25, 1996, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 24 days.
Elmer's parents homesteaded in Lead, South Dakota, before moving to Seattle, Washington, in 1918. His father was a plasterer and cement finisher, plastered the Dexter Horton Building and other Seattle buildings. A few years later he moved his family to Bremerton where he was a charter member of the plaster's union.
Hannah was a member of the Bremerton 7th Day Adventist Church while Jacob was a member of the Bremerton Lutheran Church where he spent five years doing all of the janitorial work.
When their eighth child arrived, the Walum's sold their property in Bremerton and bought a 40 acre farm in Fernwood, about three miles south of Port Orchard. Elmer, who graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1932, learned the plastering trade from his father, Jacob. Elmer built and plastered many homes in the Bremerton and Port Orchard area before moving to Seattle in 1949, where he continued building for many years.
Elmer attended the Port Orchard, Washington High School graduating from the 12th grade. March 31, 1988, he was united in marriage to Grace LaJune Gallop Crooks at Reno, Nevada.
Elmer had many favorite things in life. Above all, his family was his most important. He was an avid fisherman and loved to play cards. Many of us will remember him for his love of reading and writing poetry.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Jacob and Hannah Walum.
Survivors include his wife Grace of Nelson, Nebraska; one son, Steven Walum and his wife Maureen of Seattle, Washington; three daughters, Margaret Lutkovich and her husband Stanley of Yelm, Washington, Barbara Walum of Tukwilla, Washington, and Eileen Kersten and her husband Randall of Kent, Washington; two stepdaughters, Pat Ehlers and her husband Duane and Linda Tucker and her husband Floyd, all of Nelson, Nebraska; one stepson, Kenneth Crooks and his wife Karen of Nelson, Nebraska; one sister, Elsie Lowry and her husband Frank of Mosier, Oregon; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
