He attended high school in Philip, S.D. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in San Francisco, Calif. He served from Feb. 8, 1933 until June 16, 1938, and also served Nov. 14, 1942, to Aug. 24, 1943. He married Karen Holden-Fjeldos in September 1940. She passed away on Dec. 31, 1987.
