The Selective Service System was authorized to register and induct men
into military service in 1917. The management of the draft was the
responsibility of the states. Local draft boards were soon established
at the rate of one for every 30,000 people.
Social data in 1917-1918 are revealed as housing, occupational and
racial patterns. Genealogical data is shown as birthdate and place, name
of wife or nearest relative at the time of registration, and occupation.
A brief physical description, height, build, color of hair and color of
eyes is also included.
