Details on Peder's Life
Peder was a short and stalky man, although his seven brothers were by comparison
huge. It has been said that the most likley reason for his small size was a case
of Scarlet fever that he had when he was young. For his size however he was
stalky and very built, lending to his eventual career.
Upon arriving in the US, he took up working as a carpenter and later in building
costruction. He was seemingly proud of his work, having once chased a
subcontractor from a jobsite with an axe for doing a poor job.
Initially he was not fond of my Grandomother Inez, but became closer with Palmer
and Inez and lived with them off and on for the remainder of his life after
realizing how much Palmer cared from Inez.
To my Father Knute, he was an intimidating man. Knute has only one recolation of
his Grandfather, as he passed away when he was very young, but it has stuck with
him. When we was a young boy living in Memphis, TN, Peder came to visit. He had
a pickup truck that he had converted into a temporary home similar to what would
later become comercially available as the "truck bed camper". Curious as to what
was inside, Knute and his brother Barry carefully put the tuck tailgate down and
went inside to look around. Preoccupied with their adventure, they did not
notice that Peder had come out of the house. In a heavy norweigen accent, he
yells at the boys (now inside the truck camper) "Whaaatr areee ya dooooin in my
truuck". Knute does not remember how Barry got away, or where he escaped to, but
he headed directly upstairs to his bed and hid underneath untill his mother came
to get him out later on. From there on out he remembered Peder as being somewhat
frightning, but that would likly be the case for any kid caught in the act of
exploring grandpa's camper without permission and getting caught.
