    • Anton Oliver "Lars" Gilbertson of Helena passed away of natural causes at the home he shared with his daughter on Monday, March 29, 2004.

He was born in Watson, Minn., on Sept. 24, 1916, to Anton and Karen Anna Gilbertson. He was the middle child of a family of three girls and six boys. The family moved to a North Dakota homestead in 1917.

He moved to Helena shortly after the earthquake of 1935 in hopes of finding work in the rebuilding of Helena. In the interim, he worked seasonally in farm work and at the East Helena smelter along with his two brothers and several other friends who were referred to as "The North Dakota Bunch."

The Friday night entertainment in the area at that time was the dance at the "Shanty" in the Helena valley. There he met the love of his life, Esther Smith. They were married on March 23, 1942.

During World War II, they moved to Seattle where he took welding classes. He went to work for the Bremerton shipyards as lead welder. In February of 1943 their daughter, Ronda, was born. Early in 1945 just before the end of the war, they moved back to Helena. Lars began working for Phillps Dairy. His son, Don "Mike" was born in September of 1945.

Lars' dream was to become a carpenter like his dad. In 1948 he joined the carpenters union. For 29 of his 60-plus years as a carpenter he worked for Yuhas Millwork in Helena. His many projects grace St. Helena Cathedral, Montana state Capitol building, Charles Russell Museum, the Helena Public Library and many private homes and instituitions throughout the state of Montana.

He was preceded in death by his wife Esther in 1994, three grandsons and all but one of his brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Ronda Johns, of Helena; son, Don "Mike" Gilbertson of Green Valley, Ariz.; grandchildren Tawni Shade of the Great Falls area, Kimberly (Tim) O'Neal of La Center, Wash., Michelle Gilbertson of Thompson Falls, Tara Kelly of Enumclaw, Wash., and Brent Gilbertson of Marysville, Wash.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will hel held at St. Johns Lutheran Church today, April 2, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Wold officiating. Cremation has taken place and ashes will be placed with Esther's in a vault at Sunset Memorial Garden.

The family requests any memorials be made to St. John's Lutheran Church at 1000 Helena Ave., Helena MT, 59601.
